Chain stitching is the embellishment that’s currently taking the Western world by storm. This artform is nothing new; in fact, it’s very, very old – like ancient, we’re talking BC – and like all things fashion, it has ebbed and flowed in popularity over the years. The technique is essentially what the name implies, looped stitches that form a chain-like pattern, which unlike cross stitching’s x-squares, lends itself to curves and continuous lines. The fluid intricacy allows it to more accurately imitate drawing in embroidery form, as exemplified in the Wagoneer pieces.
It also makes it the ideal stitch for our most recent obsession: cursive customizations. And we’re certainly not alone – chain-stitched script is all the rage on everything from bags to bandanas, on everyone from cowboys to college girls. But just so you know, it looks a lot more effortless than it is. Even seasoned seamstresses struggle with it. It’s kind of like learning to back a trailer; you’ve got to get a feel for the inverse of your instincts, but once you’ve perfected it, it’s sure a thing of beauty to behold.

it’s been a very long time since I have done the chain stitch. My mother taught me to embroider. I still love things that have embroidery designs on them. This skirt….incredible.
