Our matriarch is celebrating a milestone birthday! That’s right, while she’s ageless and steadfast in our eyes – and every bit as beautiful as ever – Nana is celebrating her 85th birthday today!
Collage of pictures of Margie McMullen throughout the years and with her family.

As most of you know, Margie is an integral part of Double D Ranch’s story – and is still a key character to this day. The McMullen sisters are often lauded for their unwavering work ethic, and believe me, they come by it honestly. (Hedy will be quick to tell you, “You’ve never met a harder worker than Mom.”) She also passed down her deep-rooted faith, her resilience, and perhaps just a *teeny tiny* bit of her competitive nature – all three of which have been critical in keeping this company going for three-and-a-half decades. Well, that, and the unflappable belief in her girls, her unconditional love, and her unfaltering guidance.

Since the sisters just spilled their sentiments about their marvelous mom in a tribute video for Mother’s Day, we thought it would be a special birthday treat to hear from her grand-and great grand-children about their favorite memories and what they love most about their Nana.

Presley Carter with Nana (Margie McMullen).

“ Nana casts a warm light onto anyone she encounters. She is gentle, kind, and patient. She is a helper and a follower of Christ. She takes care of her family and supports our dreams. She holds us when we are scared, and cooks for us when we are hungry. Her garden is full of flowers and fruit, and her heart is full of love. She is an angel on this earth, and I am just so lucky to have her in my life. Love you, Nana.” – Presley Carter

“She is rock solid, the strongest woman I’ve ever met. She used to ride along with me during my golf tournaments in high school and college, and I think it made a difference – she was supportive, but competitive!” – Bryson Franz

“I love coming to Nana’s house! And I like going on vacations with her. One of my favorite memories was when we were in San Fransico and she got trapped with a street performer that was painted in gold – we laughed about it all vacation, how Nana was trapped with ‘that golden man’!” – Bracken Franz

“Some of my fondest memories are the times we spent together in the kitchen. Cooking with her wasn’t just about the food—it was when we had our best one-on-one conversations, and when she passed down her favorite recipes and techniques. Whether we were making her chicken and dumplings, crispy fried pork chops, or perfectly fried okra, those moments are when I truly got to know her.

One Christmas during college, she gave me my first chef’s knife—a Shun—which I took with me throughout my culinary journey around the world. I still use it today. It’s stayed sharp, just like her, and every time I hold it, I think of her.” – Jack Matusek

“From the moment I met Nana, she welcomed me with such warmth and kindness that it felt as though I had gained another grandmother of my own. Her gentle spirit, thoughtful words, and open heart make every conversation a joy. I admire and value the comfort and connection she offers me, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.” – Nicole Matusek

“Growing up, some of my favorite memories were made in the kitchen with Nana. I especially remember making her famous chicken and dumplings. She’s the best cook I know, and I credit my own love for cooking to those times with her. Today, one of my most cherished memories with Nana is when Mackenzie and I surprised her with a church blessing for our marriage. Though we were married in Italy, I had promised Nana we would have our marriage blessed in the Catholic Church. Seeing the joy and emotion on her face that day is something I’ll never forget.” – Walker Franz

“My favorite sentiment about Nana isn’t tied to one specific memory—it’s how she’s always made me feel. From the very beginning, when I first started dating Walker, she welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like I was already family. Whether we’re watching her zip through puzzles, admiring her beautiful garden, or catching her in the kitchen, I’m constantly inspired by her warmth, strength, and faith. I feel lucky to call her my Nana, too.” – Mackenzie Franz

“She’s the most honest, loyal, and genuine person anyone will ever meet. She’s an angel on earth.” – Taylor Franz

“She’s so nice and the best kitchen maid in the world!” — Lincoln Franz

“A quick story that I’ll always cherish is the time when Nana stayed at the Ranch with us as boys while Mom was busy designing clothes for the Double D ladies. I miss the meals she used to make us and the time we got to spend with her growing up! I love you, Nana! Happy 85th Birthday!” – Sam Matusek

“When I think about Nana, my mind is drawn towards the immense level of care and love she shows towards the world around her. Nana never missed a moment to cheer on her loved ones, or comfort us with her famous pork chops or chicken & dumplings in times of need. I am also extremely grateful for Nana as a role model in building a relationship with the Lord. The way she loves others reflects God’s heart. Whether it is through uplifting words, or simply her presence, she has shown what it means to walk in faith and serve others with a humble and joyful heart.” – Harris Franz

“Nana is the living embodiment of kindness, an unwavering work ethic, and deep faith. Her sweet smile warms my heart every time I see her, and her thoughtful compliments and quiet encouragement keep me going. How can one person be so special? She is loyal, faithful, hardworking, and truly the kindest woman I know. Happy Birthday, Nana! Here’s to many more celebrations with the incredible role model we’re blessed to call ours.”   – Mitchell Franz

And of course, a simple and sweet sentiment from Nana's littlest great-grand, Henry Matusek:

Happy 85th Birthday, Nana – from the family you raised and the (much more extended) family you’ve built in Double D Ranch!
