It’s bright, fresh-faced, and feminine. It’s definitely retro, harkening back to Hollywood cowgirls and the whole era when enhancing your aesthetic was about being soft but striking – red lips, rosy cheeks, and lashes for batting.
“I told Lisa that I wanted a modern interpretation of a classic 1940's glamour look,” explained Claire Kiser, one of DDR’s Senior Designers. “One way we did this was by staying true to the shapes they played with - rounding the brow and making sure the bow of the lip was pronounced. The red was an intentional 1940's shade, with bare eyes to leave the focus on the red lips. It was all about shaping the face in a rounded way.”
And, as she always does, our makeup guru Lisa Martensen brought our vision to life beautifully!
“Use a sheer foundation, nothing too heavy – the goal is springy and fresh versus totally flawless. If you’re comfortable enough, you can skip foundation altogether and just do a little touchup with concealer – y’all know my go-to is Hourglass Vanish.”
“Again, I filled the brows with a matte shadow, but I made the edges a little harder, a little more defined than I would for say, an outdoorsy cowgirl look. And, like Claire said, shaped them just slightly rounder to match the era.”
“A really soft neutral on the lid; I would suggest a matte and basically a nude, you can even just sweep some base powder across your lid or leave it totally bare. The focus on the eye for this look will be a thin, crisp liner – again, I used Hourglass Obsidian here – and a wispy, thin, natural false lash. You know me, it’s either falsies or nothing at all!”
“Go with a cream blush, RMS in Demure is perfect for this look. It’s soft and rosy, you can just apply a small bit and blend it in – you want it to look more like natural skin blushing.”
“I went with a coral hue* of a Dior Couture lipstick, but you could probably pull off a Ruby Woo with this look, too – a lot of you gals already have it in your cosmetics case!”
*we’re not 100% certain, but we think the shade was Adorée
