The country’s quarter-millennial is about as good a reason as any to revisit one of our most beloved jackets of all time.

The original flag denim jacket debuted during our inaugural summer collection in 1991 and it was one of our first big “made it” moments. The jacket was a classic trucker in a stonewashed denim, emblazoned with the traditional stars-and-stripes. It was instantly popular among our customer base, and then Neiman Marcus picked it up, which felt like our first splash in the national marketplace.

It was also one of our most memorable “Have we lost our minds?” moments. For the flag on the back of that jacket, we committed to using wool strips that were hand-dyed by a woman in our headquarter-hometown of Yoakum. That meant this sweet woman, a rug hooker by trade, would have to dye wool enough to fulfill those orders, and then we would have to strip all that wool and apply it to all those jackets ourselves. (In hindsight, it makes those jackets all the more unique and collectible, but boy, our fingers may never be the same.)

Needless to say, we didn’t attempt that endeavor for this iteration, but we did stay true to the original aesthetic, with a classic silhouette and soft blue denim, and of course, finished with a big, bold Star-Spangled Banner.
