It’s amazing how the subtle differences in a stroke of eyeliner or a matte lip versus a gloss can completely transform a model into a different time and place. Fortunately, our makeup guru Lisa Martensen has been with Double D for so long she “gets” us; she can interpret our vision and make the models up to match.
“All of these collections are kind of in that same era, so it’s been different variations of that retro-inspired look,” said Lisa. “Bakersfield goes back a little farther than Midnight Cowboy or Backwoods Barbie, and the look actually turned out almost pin-up style. And I got to play up the pink, which is a little outside the box for Double D, but it worked with Bakersfield.”
Face: Makeup Forever Ultra HD
“If you think about pinup girl, it’s kind of a soft sexy, not really shiny and glossy,” Lisa said. “So rather than going with a dewy look for the face, I chose a very matte, full-coverage foundation. The Ultra HD is my go-to foundation, especially on a photoshoot, because it photographs really well.”
Eyes:Shadow: Viseart 08 Editorial Bright Matte;liner: Fenty Flyliner,‘Cuz I’m Black; Ardell lashes
“I’m actually using the same shadow palette that we used for Space Cowboy,” she said. “It’s made up of really bold bright colors, not really shades that you’d see on the average everyday person. I get it from Camera Ready Cosmetics, which is available to the public but designed for the trade, intended for styling people who are going to be in front of the camera. A lot of times, editorial shoots have a theme that’s outside the ordinary – like Space Cowboy – and you have to almost overdue the makeup for effect. Bakersfield is more subtle, we’re just doing a matte white shadow on the lids and then thick swipe of black eyeliner, not quite as winged as the last two collections. And I’m adding some lashes, too, for a little extra drama.”
Cheek: Makeup Forever Cream Blush in Orchid
“Like I said, we’re playing up the pink in this one, so for the cheek, I’m doing an almost Marie Antoinette pink cheek,” Lisa said. “I’m using this cream blush in orchid, which looks scary in the palette, because it’s almost purple-y, but on, it has a nice pink to it.”

Hair:Living Proof Flex Hairspray
“When we’re talking about the hair for Bakersfield, the most important thing – and the most time consuming, by far – is lots and lots of hair extensions,” she said. “Both Kaylin and Kate have fine hair and I wanted there to be really good volume. I used Living Proof Flex Hairspray to help with that; it’s not a stiff hairspray, it almost kind of doubles as a dry shampoo, it’s great for adding volume with a little bit of hold.”
