“There was this piece of Maura’s that I’d always loved,” Cheryl said. “It predated our collaboration, but she was willing to let us use it for the collection. To do it justice, I felt like the image needed to be full-scale and stand alone; it couldn’t be reworked into a print. The caftan silhouette provided the canvas to make that possible. We created it in a stunning, sweeping silk, carried the background up to the neck, and finished it with a detail of hair pipe at the collar that mimics the image itself.”
The subject of the image was one of two sisters Maura photographed up in Montana in an untraditional shoot where the only direction she gave was, “I want to feel the land through you.” As a result, she captured the peacefulness and reverence that occur when the land and the woman are one.
