Among some of our very favorite southwestern jewelry, Santo Domingo pieces are rich in history, and we were honored to have Melanie Moon put on a series of four Thunderbird 101 sessions to provide expert insight into the particular style. The lucky limited number of attendees (all four sessions sold out almost immediately) were guided through the origin, the craftsmanship, and the unique composition of Santo Domingo jewelry. Essentially, this jewelry came about out of sheer desperation and resourcefulness, turning plastic scraps, battery casings, and even the tiniest shards of otherwise discarded turquoise into these majestic thunderbird necklaces. She place emphasis on identifying origin and presenting it in an accurate light of vintage versus contemporary, as well as classification. If you weren’t able to attend, but do have an interest in the subject, she provided this article as a key reference that was helpful in her education.
As always, a shoutout to our amazing Fort Worth team who did a fantastic job hosting -- the feedback was highly positive for the whole experience!
While the spots at Thunderbird 101 were limited, the trunk show was open to the public June 5th and 6th and several folks got their first ever Santo Domingo pieces to add to their collection. If you were able to stop by and snag something, show is in the Double D Addiction Facebook group!
