Perhaps the most prolific is Dan Simplicio, known for pioneering leaf motifs, but the talent extends to his family members, like Mike Simplicio, Isabel Simplicio, and Chauncey Simplicio, famous for intricate mosaic inlay and nugget work in sterling silver with turquoise and shell.
“Several artisans – and families of artisans – in the southwestern jewelry realm have something that makes their style identifiable,” said Cheryl. “You can often spot an Ondelacy piece by the signature silver half-moons, or a Dishta piece by the tiny, tiny stones of inlay. Most people can recognize an Oscar Betz earring at a glance, or a Charlie Favour cuff. The Simplicio signature is typically an inlaid image – rather than, say, channel or mosaic – with the most common being a horse in profile, and it’s almost always mother of pearl set in shell. The pieces are very smooth when you run your fingers over the face, which is a testament to the skill of the artisan, and Dan Simplicio’s pieces are usually set in either a serrated or scalloped bezel and complemented by turquoise nuggets and ornate silverwork. Bolos, buckles, rings – they’re all beautiful.”
Naturally, the signature Simplicio horse head in profile pieces are irresistible for accessorizing this collection.
