Back in the day, when railroads were frequently traversed by interstate travelers and accommodations sought to cater to those of the economic class who could afford to travel, dining cars were outfitted with unique, trademark china. When the pieces would inevitably chip, they’d simply be discarded, though still mostly intact.
The sets were emblazoned with emblems and scenes that encapsulate an era of Americana in an unrivaled way. Renowned Texas-based jewelry artisan Dian Malouf has made a niche by salvaging these pieces of railroad china and transforming the iconic imagery, from bison to the flag, into one-of-a-kind statement rings set in her signature style of substantial sterling silver settings. The finite nature of railroad china makes these pieces not only uniquely conversational but also collectible.
