No, not out in the yard – believe me, you don’t want to go up against the McMullen family in a real Easter egg hunt, it’s a full-contact sport! We’re talking about figurative Easter eggs.

If you’re not familiar with the term, an “Easter egg” is something intentionally hidden within a creative work (TV show, song, design, book, etc.) by the creator. It’s something that would easily be overlooked by the average audience, something that only the truly savvy might spot. It could be foreshadowing, a callback, a hidden image or reference.

Over the years, we’ve worked a few into our own designs. So this Easter, instead of climbing in trees and digging in flower beds, we thought we’d share with you some of the DDR Easter eggs!

    THE WRITING’S ON THE WALL

If you’ve visited the Fort Worth store, you’ve seen the cool custom wallpaper that adorns the walls. That wallpaper was created from the Stockman’s Bill of Sale print that debuted in the Walker collection in 2019, and if you look closely you’ll see that all of the McMullen kids and grandkids (that we had at the time), are worked into it as the buyers and sellers on the old-fashioned auction tickets.

    BRAND AWARENESS

In a similar vein, a keen eye might’ve noticed some cattle brands that are consistently present across multiple collections in several garments with that sort of aesthetic. While some of them are brands from renowned Texas ranches – the JA, the Four Sixes, etc – several of them belong to our own little family. You can find Jack’s RR for Raw Republic Meats, and Daddy Doug’s 5M Racing brand.

    IN OUR OWN IMAGE

Sometimes, we even slip likenesses from our family into the images of our designs. If you loved the Riding for the Brand Top (which a whole lot of you did), well that’s our own little Audrey Franz up there on horseback. And who could forget the Henry’s Ride Top from the Wash House collection? That beaded outline image came from a photograph captured at Cheryl’s grandson Henry’s first birthday party.

    EGGS EVERYWHERE

Well, almost everywhere we go, anyway. You can find the DDR mantra “Play Nice, Be Free” in a lot of surprise places – in the pool table room of the Continental Club in Austin, and scribbled on some raw wood in Luckenbach. Listen, we’re not condoning breaking any laws, or even rules – it should never be done with disrespect – but if you find yourself in a dive bar that invites a little harmless graffiti or sticker-slappin’, why not spread a little DDR love and positivity?! (By the way, if you do leave a little something behind, or you find one of ours – we want to see it! Snap a pic and share it in the Addiction Facebook group!)
