GETTING ‘ROUGHNECK’ READY

In terms of styling, Roughneck Rodeo was a tricky one because the apparel spans the whole life cycle of the oil gamble, from wildcatter to lease lady. Do you lean into the rugged side of the roughneck or the chic side of the oil baron? Our longtime friend and stylist guru Lisa Martensen landed on what she calls “retro boss”. Here’s how she created it:

FACE: NYX Face Glue Gripping Primer, RMS SunCoverup Super Tint SPF 50 (in Buff), Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder

“Because this look is channeling a retro aesthetic, we needed some coverage for the face. Nothing too heavy, but something to smooth it out and make it matte. Also, since we were shooting outside, SPF was obviously important.”

BROW: Revlon ColorStay Micro Brow Pencil (in Medium Brown)

“I wanted a solid brow for this look. Oftentimes, I will do a loose powder shadow for ‘furry and blurry’, but for Roughneck I wanted it to be a little more defined, so I went with a brow pencil. The goal is still soft, but a defined arch.”

EYE: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, MAC Matte Eyeshadow (in Wedge), Benefit “They’re Real” Xtreme Precision Liner, Ardell Demi Wispies Lashes

“Again, the idea is retro, so a soft neutral hue on the lid and lined with a crisp black, finished with false eyelashes and some tubing mascara. You know me – either no mascara at all or we’re going falsies!”

CHEEK: Kylie Cosmetics Hybrid Blush (in Ladybug)

“Just a soft brush of blush to the cheeks in kind of a playful pink. You don’t want to go too harsh with it, and since it’s a mid-century look, you don’t really want to go with a bronzer.”

LIP: Ulta Lip Liner, MAC Diva Matte #603

“Keep a classic shape to your lip, don’t overline them – I know a lot of young folks are doing that right now, but resist the urge!”
