We’re bringing that center stage this season in a lot of ways, not the least of which is awe-inspiring all-over beadwork.

“I think you have to see some of these pieces in person to truly appreciate just how impressive it is that these are hand-beaded,” said Hedy, our DDR details czar. “I mean, I can’t even imagine having the patience to put this many hundreds – probably thousands – of beads on something, much less keep true to a pattern! Can you imagine? These artisans have all my respect!”

We can’t imagine it either, but it sure is funny to picture Hedy giving it a go! The beaded beauties that are the star of the show in Wide Open Trails have to be the Before Barbed Wire pieces.

“When you are able to incorporate all-over beading into a design, it completely transforms the garment,” Cheryl explained. “It adds an undeniable WOW-factor. This vest, for instance, would be beautiful if we made it in just suede with beaded embellishments, but having the entire design executed in beadwork elevates it to that, ‘oh my gosh, look at that vest!’ status. DDR gals appreciate a good jaw-drop, and 360-degree hand-beading delivers!”

“Let me tell you something about these bags,” Cheryl laughed. “These are collector’s items already! Gals are already declaring they’re going to buy one of every edition and have like, the whole bamboo-handled series. Which I think is so cool – I mean, what a fabulous display that could be made in someone’s closet! – but it’s really not even something we considered when we designed them. I fell in love with that classic bamboo handle when we were abroad, and the juxtaposition of that with the really straight silhouette appealed to me, and then doing it entirely in beads transformed into an exquisite combination. I thought, ‘I can design a couple different ones to complement the collections,’ but now I’m wondering if maybe we should make it a whole ‘thing’!”
