Forget the mint juleps, the beautiful floral wreaths, and the sleek thoroughbreds!

Kentucky Derby Weekend is all about the flamboyant hats and the fashionable onlookers!

Back in 2008, I was asked to design a jacket for the lady of WinStar Farms. She requested a special jacket to wear to the Kentucky Derby. Their horse was Colonel John and although he didn't win, he was such an amazing horse. In that same year, he won theSanta Anita Derby and theWickerr Stakes, and also ran 2nd in a hard-fought race at theGoodwood Stakes. Simply a beautiful thoroughbred.

When it comes to design, black is anything but basic. In a sense, it’s essential. It’s the punctuation of a collection, the grounding hue, the modern edge. Like good winged eyeliner.
