  • The Super Chief

    November 29, 2010 1 min read 3 Comments

In the golden age of train travel the Super Chief set the bar in luxury travel.

Running between Chicago and Los Angles, the premium stream-liner passenger list was a "Who's Who of Celebrities" earning the moniker,

    "Train of the Stars"

    .

    .

Then in 1971, Amtrak took over the operation of the Super Chief passenger service, ending the 35-year run of 'El Capitan' on the Santa Fe Railway. Amtrak would continue to use the name and logo along the same route for another three years until Sante Fe forced Amtrak to drop the name due to a perceived decline in service.  The Southwest Limited, the Texas Chief, and Lone Star soon traveled the rails.

Finally in 1984, with improvements in service,  Sante Fe relented to a degree and allowed Amtrak to use the name the Southwest Chief.

. . The  United States Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp set in 1999 called, All Aboard! 20th Century American Trains. It paid tribute the "American industry and design, and specifically to the heritage of our railroads." The Super Chief was one of four luxury liners featured. .

    This old newspaper clipping advertising

the Super Chief inspired me to create

a jacket and tee for Double D Ranch.â„¢
