Today is George Washington's Birthday, hmm.....

. The first thing that comes to my mind is cherry pie, - Oh, and of course the American Revolution, ... and the Crossing of the Delaware, ...and the Father of our country...

    but pie first!

    . . .

    George's Cherry Pie

    .

    Ingredients:

    • 1 can tart cherries- water-packed
    • 1 can dark sweet cherries- water-packed
    • 4 Tablespoon Cornstarch
    • 1 Tablespoon Butter
    • 1 Teaspoon Almond Extract
    • 1 1/2 Cups Sugar
    • 2 Pie Crusts
. Directions: Preheat oven to 400°
    1. In a saucepan, combine juice from two cans of cherries,
    2. add sugar & cornstarch to juice,
    3. bring to a boil and cook 1 minute longer until thick and bubbly,
    4. remove from heat,
    5. add cherries, almond extract, and butter.
Line 9" pie platter with pastry and fill with cherry mixture. Add lattice top crust and scallop edges. Bake at 400° for 55 minutes..

    Just like George...

I can not tell a lie, this is the best Cherry Pie!

Looks great! I’ll take a slice! I love to cook and bake so I am taking down the recipe. I will let you know how it turned out. My mouth is already watering:)

Remember the movie “Michael”? Loved that movie! In the movie they sing a song about pie!

Rose, I think the trick is the almond extract – the recipe I adapted didn’t have it so I added it and all the kids love it. Never a slice left over!

I have to laugh as when I first saw this picture my first thought was when we went to visit George’s home in Mount Vernon. And as we were walking up the steps and looking into George and Martha’s bedroom and they were saying they slept in that exact room…..well I was thinking that wasnt all they were doing in that room! You know….they were probably eating cherries too! Ha!
