Much like quality furs, diamonds, or the thread counts of your sheets, silk has its own unique grading system that helps determine what weight suits your needs and taste.
The scale is known as momme (pronounced “mom-ee”), and unlike many scales, bigger doesn’t always mean better. The smaller the number, the lighter, softer, and more flowy it is – most quality wearable silks are somewhere in the teens – and then as momme increases toward 30, it starts to trade softness for durability, used for purposes like luxury bedding.
