The Past & Present collection is drenched in rich wine hues and berry shades so saturated they feel juicy. We wanted the intensity of the aesthetic to, as they say, match energy. Not an easy feat, but of course our go-to guru (for the last three+ decades) Lisa Martensen executed it exceptionally.

“Let me just preface by saying this is not an everyday look,” laughed Lisa. “And it’s not for everyone. This is very editorial, and it could definitely work for a glam night out, but it’s easy to overdo it – and running errands on a Wednesday in rich red eyeshadow might really raise some eyebrows.”

That said, if you have an occasion that warrants it or you just feel like being bold, here are Lisa’s pro tricks and product tips for recreating the Past & Perfect look.

“I don’t always mention it, but it’s never a bad idea to put on a primer. Someone once told me, ‘it’s the difference between putting makeup on cement or on glass’. Then, I used one of my very favorite face products – and I don’t have a kickback deal with them, but I should! – Tarte’s Shape Tape. You can use it to blend out discoloration and blemishes, and then you can often forego a foundation altogether. You want to limit the shine on the face because this look is all about the eyes.”

    BROW: nada!

“Believe it or not, I am not going to do a thing to the brows but comb them. Because the shadow on the eye is going to be so intense, a strong brow would be way too much – jarring and even clown-like.”

“The eye is intense, it’s the star of the show in this look, and I actually used lip products to create it. I used a ‘vino’ MAC lip liner very near the lash line, followed by a deep red eyeshadow from this highly pigmented Spotlight palette, and then topped it with MAC LipGlass in clear – which is actually a lip gloss, but it sets that pigment and also gives a gloss to the eye. Definitely no mascara, and no dark liner; anything black or dark against that red is going to give you an unpleasant contrast.”

“The key here is to keep it pale, keep it soft. Absolutely no brown contour. I actually used an IT kit called ‘My Sculpted Face’, but I think it’s been rebranded to ‘You Sculpted!’ and I haven’t experimented to see how close they are, but just super soft and pale, and then I did light brush of Tom Ford pale pink blush. Again, the eye is the star, so the cheek should be very subtle.”

“No lipstick, just a little liner of this nude Charlotte Tillbury and a touch of balm. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times – you can either have an intense eye or a bold lip, but not both!”
