GET THE LOOK: BORN ON THE BAYOU

Somehow we made “swampy” look sultry and seductive. Our longtime stylist guru, Lisa Martensen, shares her product recs and styling tips for creating the look for Born on the Bayou.

“You’ve got to put yourself in a ‘swamp’ state of mind,” Lisa laughed. “It’s going to be hot and humid, so you definitely want to go with dewy skin on the face. Then, think of the naturally occurring colors – olive greens and browns, earthy tones – but then I also added a bold black eyeliner. It’s a delicate balance of muddy and mysterious.”

BROW: REVLON ColorStay Micro Brow Pencil

“Aim for a furry, full natural brow. You want it soft, not sharp or overly arched. The REVLON brow pencil is a great, inexpensive, and easily accessible tool for adding pigment and really filling in the brow, and it also has a built-in brush for kind of ‘fluffing’ it out. Still, I like to follow up with an eyeshadow in a similar shade to really soften it up.”

“My advice is to not try to make it too ‘perfect’. I’ve always been an advocate for layering and blending – eyeshadows, blushes, lips, everything – to create the hue or effect that I have in mind. For Bayou, I wanted to play up the shades of the swamp, play up that green, so I blended olive greens and teals – several different shades of MAC shadow. I also worked in some shimmer, which I don’t often do, but it sort of helps play up the dewy look of the face and also brings in that element of New Orleans voodoo glamour. I finished with the MAC fluid liner I always use, but I layered brown with the black this time to soften it but still let it be dramatic, which also adds to that Southern gothic vibe.”

“Keep the cheeks toned down. I essentially used the products to play up the dewy texture of the skin, to emphasize the ‘hot and steamy’ effect. And y’all know how I love me some RMS!”

LIP: MAC Lipglass, RMS Go Nude Lip Pencil in Sunset Nude

“Do a soft lip liner and then blend it toward the center, and top it with gloss. The gloss will help blend the liner. Avoid overlining the lips; that’s not really the look we’re going for.”
