Miscellaneous, Burden Basket, Klickitat, Denim Wrapped, Vintage, '1800s, 217
This antique Klickitat basket holds so much history.
Dating back to the late 1800s, this is a very old, worn-out hard-sided traditional woven basket. Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest region commonly hand wove this style of slope-sided baskets from all-natural ingredients (sometimes grasses or red cedar), primarily for the sake of gathering berries and fruits. (Note: They came to be commonly referred to as Klickitat baskets, though baskets of this style were made by various tribes in the region.) This particular basket clearly got a lot of use for that purpose, and as it started to wear down, it was reinforced on the outside with old denim jeans and a diaper pin so that it could still be used -- a great example of Native American resourcefulness. If you are as endlessly fascinated with the culture and history of native peoples, the authenticity of this item is just awe-inspiring.
